LOCATION

The house is located on twelve hectares of gardens and woodlands on the hills in the Niccone valley. It lies between Umbria and Tuscany, near the E45, the main north-south highway in Umbria. It is therefore an ideal location to explore these regions from. There are many beautiful towns to visit, museums, churches, weekly markets, and excellent restaurants. We provide a detailed list of addresses and suggestions to our guests.

The closest village, Mercatale (Cortona) is around 10 km away, and has two supermarkets, a very good butcher and baker, two banks with ATM, a pharmacy, a doctor and a newsagent.

Food and shopping

The larger supermarkets, Coop, are situated in Camucia (near Cortona) and Umbertide (on the umbrian side).

There are street markets in Umbertide on Wednesday and Camucia on Thursday.

There are many factory outlets (textiles and cashmere) near Perugia.

eating

A very good restaurant in Cortona is 'Il Teatro'.

The Pizzeria 'Bastian Contrario' in Terontola is also recommended.

other Things to do

There are many beautiful cities to be visited on the Umbrian and Tuscan side, and Lake Trasimeno with its lovely islands is within easy reach and well worth a visit. Beautiful towns nearby are Perugia, Gubbio, Assisi, Arezzo, Montepulciano, Siena, and Citta' di Castello. Florence is 150 km away and Rome 200 km; both can be visited as day trips.

Many nearby villages organise typical fairs with dancing and food. There are also several music and opera festivals (for example the Tuscan Sun Festival in Cortona, organised by Frances Mayes, the author of 'Under the Tuscan Sun').
