The house

As most other farmhouses in the former Papal State, our house was built in the 1870s after the land reform promoted by the new Italian state. When we restored the house in 1976, we tried not to alter the charming quaintness of the place: uneven floors, odd shapes of windows and doors, old beams. We also used reclaimed materials to do any repairs. The house does not have the anonymity of a holiday rental: it is a very personal place with family antiques, souvenirs of travels and the finds of decades of flea-market huntings.

There are two buildings on the grounds: the main house, and the wisteria house.

THE MAIN HOUSE

The main house is on two floors, linked by external stairs, containing the traditional bread oven, still used by us for baking pizzas and roasting lamb at Easter.

First floor

On the first floor there are a living room, with a large fireplace, a master bedroom with bathroom en suite, a dressing room and a large kitchen.

My husband and I are active cooks and our kitchen is particularly well-equipped: a large professional range, two ovens, pots, pans, knives and utensils galore, a table that sits ten and, of course, dishwasher, washing machine, and tumble-dryer. There is also a wood-fuelled cooker for winter.

Outside space

There are two terraces with garden furniture off the rooms, and a large terrace in front of the house, with a huge parasol, table and chairs for outdoor eating. Several benches are scattered on the paved terraces, and under trees in the garden, so that you can enjoy the different atmospheres at the various times of the day.

The wisteria house

The wisteria house stands separate from the main house, and contains a single room on the ground floor with en-suite bathroom, and a sitting room upstairs with a sofa bed. A cot is also available.

Both rooms have separate entrances giving access to two terraces, one covered by vines with a bench where the family often eats breakfast. The whole house is covered in sweet-smelling Wisteria.
